@Veejur Thank you, Veejur ??? It angers me as well. It's our doctors that we meet with to discuss our care, not some random pharmacist. Seems like the doctor/patient relationship no longer exists. The care we receive must also be approved by our health insurers, govt agencies as well as pharmacists. I get the feeling that most doctors still in practice are only there for the paycheck at this point.

Just getting a script filled beyond a 50 mile radius of the prescribing practice can get a person red flagged at a pharmacy. Just wow. The criteria is so vague too. Get a few paranoid pharmacists & out come the red flags

Wow @snoozer , I agree with @Veejur -- great article. I did not know this was happening. I had heard of shortages but wasn't quite sure what that was about and luckily have not been directly impacted.

One item I noticed in the article was that 50 morphine milligram equivalents (MME) was listed as the maximum acceptable script amount (sort of) and that amount used to be 90 morphine milligram equivalents or so I thought. That seems like a big change.

When I first started being scripted PKs regularly I took the time to get to know my pharmacist. Sort of - not like I invited him over or anything. Haha. But when I requested the refill, I would talk to the pharmacist or tech and explain my chronic pain issue. Asked for their opinion on various med choices. Showed them respect, said please and thank you. That worked for a decade or two and I felt less judged. But over the years the pharmacist and staff changed due to retirement, moving, whatever. Didn't really have the interest or ability to get acquainted with the new staff. But I do have a script history there, years of fills which I think means something. Although I am not naive enough to think I am somehow protected from an unexpected taper imposed by a new pharmacist having a bad day.

@PinkieToes , you broke EIGHT ribs !?!? Wow that's a lot and broken ribs I have read are super painful. How did you manage to break so many ribs if you don't mind saying? I am glad you were able to get the pain killers you needed finally but to have to wait FIVE days, that's insane.

This new piece is because several pharmacies settled a suit where they were actually held "accountable" for filling too many pk and benzo scripts when they "should have known." It's SUCH complete and utter BS!

Yeah there was a short time when those pill mills were in heavy operation and I'm sure everyone in on it knew it was bogus. But g-dammit, it's STILL ultimately up to the person who actually puts the dang pill into their mouth. I just cannot hold anyone else accountable when I know what I'm doing and I keep doing it and something bad happens as a result.

Just as I don't want the liquor store clerk telling me what I can and can't buy, I don't want the pharmacist worrying about whether I'm an addict and am pulling a fast one on my doctor. I am the one responsible for my actions. If we aren't willing to take this responsibility, then we just invite all this nanny oversight. Frustrates me no end...

If doctors and pharmacists were compassionate they would not withhold something that allows one to function like a normal person. But instead we the people are forced to find other avenues and pay out of pocket for any relief they might find. It's ridiculous!

Here is a thought, if you can't get your pk's then grow your own. Poppies are very easy to grow and contain lots of actives. Not just the pods but the leaves and stems have goodies in them as well. Forget what you heard about lancing them and collecting the sap. You do that if you have a huge field of them and just want to skim the best part. Be careful because they can be strong and even one large pod might give an overdose. Save and dry the leaves and small stems, you can make a tea with them which will carry you through

I just dropped some poppy seeds in an area of my yard because it was starting to rain. They like cool weather but not freezing and where I am it doesn't freeze. They were in the fridge for a very long time so I don't expect even 10% to sprout but I dumped thousands of seeds so even 1% will give me a crop. There are places that will sell seeds by the pound, you can even make a tea out of the seeds. If you are into that then look for "unwashed" seeds. They soak the seeds for a while and drink the water after straining out the seeds. This too can be very strong so start with a small amount. The seeds you soaked can be planted right away, just scatter them out on the surface of soil. Poppies don't like to be buried deep like some other plants do.

I'm not sure if I will sample any of the pods, I might just for kicks one time. I haven't tried it in many years and I have leftover pk's that I got when I had surgery a few years ago. But at a minimum, I will be able to harvest fresh seeds and some pods. When you look for seeds be sure its a potent variety, there are strains of poppies that don't have morphine, just a compound they can later chemically convert into a pk. You won't get a buzz from them but many varieties are good. I just planted gigantiums which are supposed to have huge pods. I will likely throw out the leaves and stems since we are not allowed to give stuff away but there are other sites which do allow trades. I have more grow tips if anyone is interested

I'm interested in this but wouldn't know where to start
I can remember a million years ago I bought three small papaver somniferum plants at my local nursery. Waited til the flowers were done and the pods grow larger after. I couldn’t really believe they would be “effective” but I took three pods and ground them (fresh) in a blender with hot water and lemon. Strained out the material and drank. Tastes very “green” and I thought it had no effect but about an hour later I was amazed that i actually was under the sleepyong poppy spell. The effects always come on slower and last much longer but the issue with having no idea how much you’ve gotten has turned me away in these last few years.

I’m sure if I do get desperate I’ll be looking to this plant again tho.

@jaders the inability to determine the strength of dosage going this route would make this my last resort for pain management as well.
Yeah. You really have to work with it somewhat extensively to get to be good at it. The seeds seem a little less varied but I’ve never used them.

Like i said tho years ago all summer I would have access and it was amazing how effective and long lasting the real deal is. It just requires time and patience.

These stupid folks who make accessing painkillers so difficult just create more hazardous avenues. I wish they would remember when alcohol was prohibited. The same exact problems arose. I doubt I’ll live long enough but I think phenomena like fentanyl and all the underground drug seeking might help the powers that be to strike some sort of balance instead of this constant attempt at prohibition. 😔

Its true that the potency can vary. The way to deal with that is to start small. If you are trying to kill pain, then try 1 small pod. Wait about an hour and see how its hitting you. Then you could take more or maybe you are already fine. If you grow just one variety, after you have tested them a time or two you know how much to take and have your dose figured out.

None of the seed I sowed yesterday has sprouted. The seeds are quite old, perhaps 10 years or more and are probably bad. I will order a new batch, you can check to make sure its a potent variety. Any somniferum should be good but beware of california poppy. It does produce a substance that people find helpful but its not an opiod, not the real thing.

They like sun and will grow rapidly. I would think that if someone relies on pk's they would benefit from having a stash of pods. Don't forget the leaves and stems, maybe they dont taste like a proper tea but they have goodies in them. Better than running out and going into wd. They can survive a frost, some varieties freeze in winter then thaw out in spring and continue growing. Around a couple months to mature. If you let a few pods drop the seeds, the area will grow back every year. You may be cursing the post office for not delivering your package you need so badly then you remember that flower patch and lo and behold, there are some goodies to tide you over. Even seedlings have some potency. Dried leaves will last a long time in storage.

I just ordered some seeds in case the old ones I planted don't come up. The old ones were just over 8 years old so no surprises if they are dead even though they were in the fridge. Its hard to make sure you get the potent variety so I looked for "unwashed" seeds because that is code words for seeds from potent plants. I looked through the feedback and they said things like 'quality' varied from batch to batch but they were definitely unwashed. So the customers are mostly buying the seeds to catch a buzz or stave off wd's. Cost me $10.78 at etsy for 4 oz which should be plenty. Watch out for ads offering a certain number of seeds like 100 or 500. You will be disappointed at the tiny pinch you get. Buy ounces or pounds, they are very cheap by the pound

The nice thing about growing your own is you can't really get hooked on them. When you have used up the harvest you have to wait for the next crop. It takes close to 3 months for a good crop and you get nice flowers to look at. They will bloom all year except when its snow on the ground but they like it cool. I could have gotten a lb for $16 but I just want to grow some

A lb for $16 is a very good price. You use Etsy to find those, you said?

Wow, I always just assumed poppy plants were illegal so never tried looking into it. Does seem a bit draconian to stop others planting a few flowers in their back yard. I will have to check it out :)

Definitely not illegal to plant. I see them all around my neighborhood in the late spring. The only illegal part is “harvesting” them. I wouldn’t go growing a huge field or anything…???

Yes, I found the seeds on etsy, they had better deals than ebay. I guess you could just soak them and drink the soak. You do have to be a little careful since it could be extra strong. They often soak the seeds twice to get all the goodies. After soaking they will sprout easily. If it doesn't rain use the mist setting on your sprinkler to water the plants, large drops will knock the seedlings over.

Poppies are perfectly legal to grow. You aren't supposed to make tea or extract from the plants but unless you confessed or did it right in front of a cop they have nothing to go on. Simply cutting them down and letting them dry is fine. They go inside and what happens next, nobody knows. As I've said, its good to save the whole plant if you think you will need more later since stems and leaves are good.
